The Lip Plate Tradition

 

The lip plate tradition, also known as lip plugging, is an ancient ritual practiced by certain ethnic and indigenous tribes of the world. It is an extreme body modification technique which involves inserting increasingly larger plates or plugs into the lip or lower lip, stretching it over time to fit an object or insert of larger size. It is typically found among the Suyá people of Brazil and the Surma, Mursi and Kara tribes of Ethiopia.

The lip plate tradition is thought to be part of an ancient rite of passage that is seen as a way to signify adulthood and initiate a young woman into womanhood.

It is said that the lip plates signify that a woman is marriageable and is desirable to the opposite sex. In many cultures, the bigger the lip plate, the more desirable the woman. This idea has perpetuated the tradition, leading to women of many of these tribes trying to obtain larger plates.

This tradition is believed to be thousands of years old, with evidence showing its use among ancient populations in Africa and South America. Lip plates were also once widely used among certain South Pacific island nations, and traces of the practice can still be found in parts of Southeast Asia.

Despite the lip plate tradition being extremely controversial, it is seen as an integral part of some of these tribes’ cultures and is fiercely defended by them. As the popularity of lip plate tradition has grown, it has increasingly become a part of many people’s wardrobes in the form of metal plates and fashionable jewelry. While it is still controversial and not without risks, the lip plate tradition is seen by many as an important and ancient form of body modification that is a part of many cultures and peoples around the world.
